GYSTS: 7 Tips for Cleaning Out Your Closet

Last week, I took a look at my closet and thought - OMG, I have not worn some of these clothes in years.  Literal years.

So today, it's #GYSTS and I've purged my closet of all those clothes that I have no idea why I am still hanging on to them.

So here are my 7 tips for cleaning out your closet:

1.  Open a bottle of wine.

Enjoy the process of "Let it go" (Thanks, Frozen).  Keep moving and don't stress out over it.

Not a fan of that movie, channel your inner Eminem - "Cleaning Out My Closet."

2.  If I haven't worn the item in a year.

I know a lot of Pinterest articles swear by the trick of turning the hangers around backwards, then after a year, getting rid of those clothes which haven't had their hanger turned around.  Well unfortunately for me, I never got around to putting that in place.  So I'm relying on my age old memory.  I bought my house about a year and a half ago, and have now decided, if I have not worn the clothing/shoe/purse in that amount of time, then it goes.  Period.

3.  If it has holes or damaged that is beyond repair.

Yeah sure, you may wear it.  But is it really fit for public?  That seem that is ripped out, or that shirt you only wear when you cuff up the sleeves.  If you haven't fixed it yet, you're probably not going to.  So just let it go.

4.  The trendy silhouette is out of style.

Crop tops are back!  Over are the days of the t-shirts.  Sometimes I feel like I should be saving items for when they come back in style.  That's just crazy for most things.  Styles cycle seemingly every 20+ years, so holding onto a piece of clothing that long IN CASE you'll want to wear it again is nuts.   Granted, I will keep a one-of-a-kind piece with special memories.  (I know, I'm a softy).

5.  It doesn't fit - and won't anytime soon.

Byeeeeeeeeeeeee to that last pair of jeans that I've been holding onto since high school - it's time to finally accept that these will never fit again.    It's okay to have that pair of jeans that are your "skinny jeans."  That is a realistic goal.  But, something that is way out of your size needs to go.  Stop beating yourself over the fact that it doesn't and move forward.

6.  Ask myself, do I even like wearing this?

If this is the item that you wear when you haven't done laundry in weeks and dread wearing it, just get rid of it.  Learn to do laundry more often.  I know I need to.

7.  Split your piles in charity and trash.

I always feel better about getting rid of something when I'm not just tossing it in the garbage.  So even if something is out of style or doesn't fit you correctly, put it in a bin for charity - it makes departing with it not quite as hard.

So time to hop to it!  See if you can make some space in your closet to go shopping!
